Before this, the biggest score against them was in the 1972 Grand Final (but Richmond got 150 points on that day!). The biggest margin against them still remains at 115 points (I’m still trying to ascertain the details of that match. When I find them, this bracketed sentence will be replaced). • #AFLFreoSuns 3.2 7.2 13.5 17.10 (112) def 4.1 7.5 8.8 9.8 (62). A bit of a scare for punters at half-time, with the Suns ahead by three points. Appears, however, that whatever the Freo coach said to his charges at the main break worked, coz they then came out with 6.3 to 1.3 in the third!

A part-time Bombers-supporter I know was in town for the Tutankhamen exhibition this weekend and asked me if he should go to the match. After all, it was against Geelong and they weren’t expected to win. I said that, as a full-time Carlton supporter, the only other time I’ve seen my boys win (apart from at the SCG in April) was at the NAB Cup when we beat the Swans by 100 points; we actually plan holidays and social occasions around the fixture! I think that gent will be a happy man when I speak to him on Monday!

I had said earlier that, "Neither side is having that good a run at the moment, but the Roos have pulled out a couple of surprises in recent weeks." Unfortunately the Saints did the pulling today (again with the 20/20 hindsight), despite being kept scoreless in the last. That brought my tipping down to 3 from 8! Bleaghh!!

The home-side went into this match as clear-cut favourites, with betting as far down as $1.33 and the visitors out to $3.90. But the Crows were determined not to be the whipees tonight as they soon got that live betting-odds worm facing the other way with goals to Tippett (2), McKernan, Vince, and Wright, and one to Rory Sloan in the last 8sec of the opening stanza. The Crows led for the whole of the second quarter but we started seeing more from the Dogs than we had for the rest of the year! By the main break the Sons of the West were into $1.35 while the Pride of SA were out to $3.50 and the scores were

Goals in the first half came from Giansiracusa (2), Sherman, Barlow, Griffen, and Murphy for the Dogs, and Tippett (2), McKernan, Sloane, Knights, Vince, and Wright for the Crows.  Major home-team ball-winners were Griffen, Ward  (17), Cross  (16), Murphy (13), Gia, and Boyd (12), and Henderson  (17), Thompson (16), Otten (13) and Symes (12) for the out-of-towners.

The Dogs took the lead after the twenty-minute mark of the third quarter, coming to within a point, and not looking like getting ahead, in the first ten minutes. The bookies had this turn-over on the cards, with the betting never being less than $1.40 for the home side once they were favoured, and comments on Twitter like, “The Crows are playing so shit they are making the Dogs look good” giving a dandy description of what the bookies saw coming! By the last break, the Dogs were into $1.18 but the Crows were out to $6 with a score-line of

Ten minutes into the last the Dogs were ahead 80-62, with the smart money getting short returns ($1.03 vs $20). In the end, though, pride in the home-state just wasn’t enough.

OK, Essendon and Fremantle were 7th and 8th coming into this contest, and feeling was that the Bombers would come away with the points. But rumblings on Twitter during the first quarter were that the visitors had a lot of work to do to even look like making a fist of it, with a score-line of 1.1 to 6.3 at the first break.

The rest of the game appears to have run the same course, with the Dons kicking 1.5, 3.1, and 4.3 in the next three quarters, in answer to the Dockers' 3.1, 4.2, 2.2. The final scores

Next week, Fremantle (7th) has the Demons (currently 9th but facing the Pies tomorrow) in Melbourne, which could really go either way but I'll be backing the Ds. Essendon (now 8th) has North (now 12th) which by all rights they should win, but with all that seems to be going on, they probably won't. My tip'll be with the Kangas.

So what is happening at Windy Hill?! Up until Round 9 I considered them a contender for the top 4 with Carlton, the Cats, and the Pies, and think I've tweeted as much. Essendon have come up against a mixed-bag until then, facing

But, for mine, the slide began in R9 with their 16 point loss to Richmond. You can read all the whats and whyfors in the paper: I didn't see it, but after the bye, they faced, and lost to, Melbourne by 33 points. The Dockers were an either-or proposition, and proved to be an or with this loss.

Can Hirdy pull something dramatic out of the fire, or is he, like Vossy, going to be looking for a new gig next year? Time will tell.
