The home-side went into this match as clear-cut favourites, with betting as far down as $1.33 and the visitors out to $3.90. But the Crows were determined not to be the whipees tonight as they soon got that live betting-odds worm facing the other way with goals to Tippett (2), McKernan, Vince, and Wright, and one to Rory Sloan in the last 8sec of the opening stanza. Goals in the first half came from Giansiracusa (2), Sherman, Barlow, Griffen, and Murphy for the Dogs, and Tippett (2), McKernan, Sloane, Knights, Vince, and Wright for the Crows.  Major home-team ball-winners were Griffen, Ward  (17), Cross  (16), Murphy (13), Gia, and Boyd (12), and Henderson  (17), Thompson (16), Otten (13) and Symes (12) for the out-of-towners.

The Dogs took the lead after the twenty-minute mark of the third quarter, coming to within a point, and not looking like getting ahead, in the first ten minutes. The bookies had this turn-over on the cards, with the betting never being less than $1.40 for the home side once they were favoured, and comments on Twitter like, “The Crows are playing so shit they are making the Dogs look good” giving a dandy description of what the bookies saw coming! By the last break, the Dogs were into $1.18 but the Crows were out to $6 with a score-line of

Ten minutes into the last the Dogs were ahead 80-62, with the smart money getting short returns ($1.03 vs $20). In the end, though, pride in the home-state just wasn’t enough.

OK, Essendon and Fremantle were 7th and 8th coming into this contest, and feeling was that the Bombers would come away with the points. But rumblings on Twitter during the first quarter were that the visitors had a lot of work to do to even look like making a fist of it, with a score-line of 1.1 to 6.3 at the first break.

The rest of the game appears to have run the same course, with the Dons kicking 1.5, 3.1, and 4.3 in the next three quarters, in answer to the Dockers' 3.1, 4.2, 2.2. The final scores

Next week, Fremantle (7th) has the Demons (currently 9th but facing the Pies tomorrow) in Melbourne, which could really go either way but I'll be backing the Ds. Essendon (now 8th) has North (now 12th) which by all rights they should win, but with all that seems to be going on, they probably won't. My tip'll be with the Kangas.

So what is happening at Windy Hill?! Up until Round 9 I considered them a contender for the top 4 with Carlton, the Cats, and the Pies, and think I've tweeted as much. Essendon have come up against a mixed-bag until then, facing

Can Hirdy pull something dramatic out of the fire, or is he, like Vossy, going to be looking for a new gig next year? Time will tell.

#AFLCrowsEagles - Results and Report

As requested, rather than make this a larger tweet with a deck.ly compressed post, I thought I’d make this report a blog entry. But I’m going to make some comment about it; that I wouldn’t have done on Twitter.

Final results from this afternoon’s clash of the birds are not a surprise, but if you had taken the final result from the opening quarter, maybe they are. 6th played 14th at AAMI Stadium on a cool and cloudy afternoon; the punters were backing the Crows fairly publicly, with one punter’s $10K bet on them within the last half-hour before play, but the market said otherwise at the outset, with Betfair offering $2.26 for the Crows to win here.

Starting strongly, probably urged by that large bet, the score at the break was Adelaide 3.1 (19), West Coast 1.3 (9), with majors to Wright (2.1), Gunston (1.0) [Adelaide], and  Lecras (1.0).

But that was it for the Crows for that half: the Weagles jumped out of the gates for the second stanza with five unanswered goals to two points. At the main break, the visitors had a commanding lead: Adelaide 3.3 (21), West Coast 8.7 (55).

And the shoe was firmly on the other foot for the third quarter, with the visitors stepping up to the plate for the last in this see-saw event. At ¾-time the locals had scored 5.2 to 1.3, but the visitors increased their lead with another 6.6 to 2.2 by the final siren.

I recently signed up for the www.carmansfinefoods.com.au newsletter after contacting the company with a problem I experienced in obtaining some of their fine foods (their Rounds are truly delish and, while I don't see them in Woollies, are worth the trek to another supermarket [Coles] to buy).


In response to their Muesletter No.24 I retweeted Carolyn's note. This is her note from this month

If I had to select the one characteristic that sets great business leaders apart these days, I would sum it up as courage. Courage to make the tough calls, to take the first step into unchartered territory, to lead and not follow. However I have a firm belief that we all need more moral courage in our personal lives as well. Courage to let a friend know when you feel that they have let you down, to admit that you were wrong and to apologise, to let go of people when you realise that they are simply not good for you, to speak up about an unacceptable racist joke or to stand up for the person who isn’t there to defend themselves. Expressing it with kindness, grace and compassion is the key.  It is one of my dreams to live a life without any regrets.  I hope I have the courage in my daily life to tackle these challenges when they come my way and wish the same for you too.

I posted this note because I had a "courage" episode of my own since my last blog. You might remember my whingeing on Twitter about school-kids on trains. That whinge extended to eMails to the offending schools, to which I only got two replies. And the situation hasn't really changed. But this time I spoke up. 

Two girls from a school which will remain unnamed [1] were on the train this particular morning. While they were standing in the vestibule area in a relatively empty service, they took the seats in front of me when they became vacant. Which I didn't mind until the service started filling up again. When we left Granville station, there were people standing in the aisles, and these two remained seated. I'd had enough

"Isn't it about time you two stood up?"

"Sorry?"

I said it again. They left. Two of the paying passengers got a seat. 

"I've always wanted to do that," I said as they sat down, but I'm pretty sure they had no idea what I was talking about. I didn't feel that good about what I'd done, but then I'd been pretty ticked about seeing kids seated while I was standing. I had also been pretty ticked when I saw a South-Asian "gent" take a seat while a pregnant ex-pat stood. OK I remained seated as well,[2] but when I did get up, I made sure she got the empty seat.

[2] When I get a seat, I keep it. Osteoarthritis qualifies me as being partially disabled, plus the other stuff going on or which has been going on recently. My $0.02 worth
