A little while ago, it was decided that the CEO at Demon HQ should step aside. Cameron Schwab was quite divisive within the club, which wasn’t what they needed during arguably the darkest period of a once-great club. Founded in 1868 as the first Australian Football club and inaugural/foundation member of the VFA (VFL after 1897), the Ds boast 11 flags, most notably 5 from six grand finals 1955-1960. They even made a foray into the finals at the end of both the 20^th Century and the career of club great and media footy-guru Garry Lyon, and again 2004-2006 under Neale Daniher.

So what’s going on? The accusation of tanking[1] has been investigated and dismissed … there’s now allegations of illicit drugs and player doping. In a number of articles pundits, former players, and more informed footy supporters than myself are asking the same questions. Chris Dawes says of his departure from Melbourne that the guys just don’t want to improve, although Jakus says there is definitely talent there, but “insipid” performances of late question the wont for them to want to do well.

And former player David Schwarz says that the Ds are in danger of becoming the next Fitzroy [2], despite being in a stronger position 3-4 years ago than the Punt Road up-and-comers whose struggles appear to be finally over, and now Melbourne are another 6-7 years away from where the Tigers are now. And the fans are faring no better, many of whom have been brandishing white flags at recent matches.

Dr Bibotelli suggests that the divisions within the club go back to the infamous Norm Smith incident of 1965. Things certainly weren’t going that well when club legend Jim Stynes was at the helm, either.   

At least the appointment of Peter Jackson to the head of the club, with his ready-to-wield machete, promises big things.

Ds supporters can only hope, anyway, and this comes from the supporter and member of another once-great club who have had many promises since our dark times of the mid-to-late 00s.

[1] Tanking is the term for deliberately throwing matches and/or playing badly in order to finish low on the ladder and therefore get better choices during draft season.

[2] Fitzroy Lions, another foundation club, hit the skids during the 1990s and were merged with then-newcomers Brisbane Bears to become the Brisbane Lions in 1996. Apparently the Ds and Hawks were close to merging at the time, as well, but that was KO’d by Hawthorn’s rank and file.

AFL Best and Worst

The shellacking that several sides copped this weekend sent me to the record books this morning to try to ascertain the best and worst ever.

Unfortunately the best-ever was the 1929 Filth side (18:0 1918:1117 171.71%). The 1995 Carlton side (20:2 2357:1711 90.91%) shares equal 8th spot with the 2009 St Kilda side (20:2 2197:1411 90.91%), but at least the Blues went on to win the Grand Final that year! (beating Gary Ablett's hapless Cats 141:80!!)!

The worst-ever, however, is a shared "honour" between
1913 and 1914 Students
1928 and 1950 Hawks
1931 and 1934 Kangaroos
1964 Lions
and the 1898-9 and 1902 Saints - all sides losing every match that year. The 1913 Students have the "honour" of having the lowest-ever end-of-year percentage of 47.02%.

What I was looking for, though, was the lowest-ever end-of-round-2 percentage. GWS are currently on 32.16% [unofficial at time of writing] with the Suns on 41.67% and the Demons on 47.72%. Looking back through the last ten years of the AFL and the first ten of the VFL, the 2008 Demons came close with 36.8, and the 1897 Geelong side had 38.7%. But the lowest of the low goes to the 1901 Blues with 16.8%, and the 1898 Saints 18.6%. Doubtless later years will reveal lower Round-2 percentages, so the Giants are not as bad as all that!

I said that, as a full-time Carlton supporter, the only other time I’ve seen my boys win (apart from at the SCG in April) was at the NAB Cup when we beat the Swans by 100 points; we actually plan holidays and social occasions around the fixture! I think that gent will be a happy man when I speak to him on Monday!

The home-side went into this match as clear-cut favourites, with betting as far down as $1.33 and the visitors out to $3.90. But the Crows were determined not to be the whipees tonight as they soon got that live betting-odds worm facing the other way with goals to Tippett (2), McKernan, Vince, and Wright, and one to Rory Sloan in the last 8sec of the opening stanza. Goals in the first half came from Giansiracusa (2), Sherman, Barlow, Griffen, and Murphy for the Dogs, and Tippett (2), McKernan, Sloane, Knights, Vince, and Wright for the Crows.  Major home-team ball-winners were Griffen, Ward  (17), Cross  (16), Murphy (13), Gia, and Boyd (12), and Henderson  (17), Thompson (16), Otten (13) and Symes (12) for the out-of-towners.

The Dogs took the lead after the twenty-minute mark of the third quarter, coming to within a point, and not looking like getting ahead, in the first ten minutes. The bookies had this turn-over on the cards, with the betting never being less than $1.40 for the home side once they were favoured, and comments on Twitter like, “The Crows are playing so shit they are making the Dogs look good” giving a dandy description of what the bookies saw coming! By the last break, the Dogs were into $1.18 but the Crows were out to $6 with a score-line of

Ten minutes into the last the Dogs were ahead 80-62, with the smart money getting short returns ($1.03 vs $20). In the end, though, pride in the home-state just wasn’t enough.
